Sub: Request for permission for capture of 21 numbers of Naja naja for education purposes - reg
Sir,
Reference is invited to the letter of the Chief Wild Life Warden, Maharashtra seeking this Ministry’s permission under Section 12 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 for capturing 21 male Naja naja from Shirala Forest Range, Sangli Division, Maharashtra, for educational purposes.
2. As requested by the Chief Wild Life Warden, the undersigned is directed to convey the previous approval under the proviso (a) of Section 12 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, for capture of 21 male Naja naja from Shirala Forest Range, Sangli Division, Maharashtra, for educational purposes, subject to the following conditions:
i. The selection and identification of specimen of species shall be decided by the CWLW or officer authorised by him. The capture, release and education activity shall be done as specified by the CWLW to be done in presence of local forests/wildlife officials.
ii. The capture and release of 21 numbers of male Naja naja from Shirala Forest Range, Sangli Division, Maharashtra, would be for a period from 27th - 31st July 2025 only. The animals will be released back to their area of capture/natural habitat after this period.
iii. The entire process for each case shall be documented for records by the Chief Wild Life Warden, Maharashtra.
iv. The proposed capture would be undertaken solely for educational purposes, aimed at disseminating traditional knowledge on snake conservation among local youth and the broader community and to ensure the generational transfer of indigenous traditional knowledge about snakes and their utility in the ecosystem. No commercial use or entertainment of any kind shall be permitted.
v. The Chief Wild Life Warden, Maharashtra, shall ensure that there is no injury/harm caused to the snake during the entire process and that there shall be zero mortality of the snakes and snakes should be safely released back in the wild from the area of capture/natural habitat well within the stipulated timeline.
vi. The entire exercise shall be conducted strictly under the supervision of the State Forest Department. The Chief Wild Life Warden, Maharashtra, must ensure the presence of departmental staff, trained snake handlers, veterinary professionals, and adequate medical facilities in all cases, to safeguard the well-being of both the snakes and the public.
vii. Adequate veterinary care should be ensured at all stages of capture and subsequent release and be done with utmost caution. Due care should also be taken to avoid post-capture complications.
viii. In the event of any incident that endangers or has the potential to endanger the safety of the animals, the Ministry reserves the right to review and, if necessary, revoke the permission granted.
ix. The Chief Wild Life Warden, Maharashtra shall ensure compliance with all applicable provisions of any relevant laws, rules, or regulations in force.
3. The Chief Wildlife Warden may take further action in the matter accordingly.
